Genesis One Christian School, (GOCS), was conceived in 1977, during the early days of “mandated” desegregation in Simpson County.  During that period black children were disproportionately placed in special education classes because of their low scores on school entrance exams. Educators and concerned community leaders understood that the students’ poor performance was mainly due to lack of school readiness. GOCS began as an experiment in 1978 to demonstrate that black children would perform on par with their white counterparts when given similar opportunities. The experiment was successful in demonstrating this.  GOCS students performed in the top 10 percentile on Stanford Aptitude Test for three consecutive years.  GOCS became a model of preschool education.

Today, Genesis One Christian School serves students from Nursery three through 6th grade, from Simpson County and the five surrounding counties. Most, if not all students qualify for free lunch through the Federal Child Nutrition Program. 

Using the ABEKA curriculum, GOCS aims to establish a foundation that students can build on as they matriculate from one academic level to the next; and to instill a desire and pursuit of life-long learning.  

Specifically, the objectives are to guide and equip students to: 

• Know and experience the love of Jesus Christ;
• Read at or above their grade levels;
• Have a strong science and technology foundation; 
• Have an appreciation for the arts; and 
• Be creative and think outside the box.

In August 2020, GOCS made a historic move. After 36 years of operation in the renovated former Harper High School dormitory, the School moved to TMM’s former Thrift Store at 104 South Grand Avenue. During the last 20 years this facility housed the Five-County Head Start Center. The new facility provides additional space required for growth and expansion. The current enrollment is 50. The goal is 60 students.
